Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy vs Ketamine Infusion Therapy

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a psychotherapy that utilizes the psychedelic properties of Ketamine to heal the emotional causes of mental health while Ketamine Infusion Therapy (KIT) relies on the pharmaceutical properties (i.e. anti-depressant properties) to treat mental health symptoms.

Ideal Clients/Patients

KAP - Individuals with PTSD, trauma, anxiety, OCD, treatment-resistant depression, and those interested in holistic healing.

KIT - Individuals with severe depression, acute suicidal ideation, chronic pain, and those needing rapid relief.

Administration Method

KAP - Typically a lozenge or intramuscular (IM) injection. Easy to administer in a less clinical setting.

KIT - Typically administered directly into the bloodstream via IV but other administration methods may be used. More clinical in nature.

Set & Setting

KAP - Relaxed, supportive environment (therapist’s office). Focus on openness, trust, and intention-setting.

KIT - More clinical with medical supervision. Less emphasis on psychological processing.

Focus

KAP - Focused on emotional processing, trauma reprocessing, holistic healing, and psychotherapy integration.

KIT - Focused on the pharmaceutical properties of Ketamine for rapid symptom relief. Tends to be a short-term treatment requiring medical monitoring,

Session Length

KAP - Longer sessions (up to 3 hours). Ketamine lasts ~40 minutes, with therapy before and after.

KIT - Shorter sessions (40 minutes to 1 hour). Ends when the infusion is complete.
